Dr. Travis Niles offered a presentation on piety in Epicurean sources and in Paul&#8217;s Areopagus speech.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abstract:\u00a0<\/strong>The lexical field of \u03b5\u1f50\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u00a0occupies little space in Luke-Acts (Acts 3:12; 10:2, 7; 17:23).\u00a0Considering the scarcity of its use by the\u00a0<em>auctor ad Theophilum<\/em>, the occurrence of \u03b5\u1f50\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd\u00a0in Acts 17:23 during Paul\u2019s Areopagus address to the Athenians \u2013 which includes Epicureans (Acts 17:18) \u2013 deserves closer attention. In the commentaries of Fitzmyer and Keener, for example, one finds a focus on the concepts of \u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u00a0and \u1f04\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1, but not \u03b5\u1f50\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1. Alternatively, as in M. Becker\u2019s\u00a0<em>Lukas und Dion von Prusa<\/em>,one finds a treatment of \u03b5\u1f50\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1, but only in relation to Dio Chrysostom and Epictetus.
